NABJ President Visits Seattle

Bryan MonroeJournalists and the public are invited to “A Conversation with Bryan Monroe,” president of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), at The Seattle Times auditorium at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 16.

The free event is co-sponsored by the University of Washington student chapter of Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) and the Western Washington SPJ professional chapter.
Monroe is based in Chicago where he is the editor in charge of Ebony and Jet magazines. He will be in Seattle to accept an award as a distinguished alumnus of the University of Washington, where he was the first African-American editor of The Daily student newspaper.

He was the second-highest- ranking news executive at Knight Ridder when that company was sold to McClatchy a year ago. He led a team that helped the Biloxi Sun Herald win the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service and served as a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University in 2003.

In 2005 he was elected president of NABJ, the nation’s largest journalism organization of color serving more than 4,000 members.
